Why organic shapes and smoked glass are the antidote to sterile modern design.

Why organic shapes and smoked glass are the antidote to sterile modern design.

In conversation with interior stylist Elara Vance on banishing the "showroom look" and embracing the moodier side of modernism.

At LEDLIGHTHUB, we love modern design. But we’ll be the first to admit: sometimes, "modern" can feel... cold. We’ve all walked into those spaces—stark white walls, sharp corners, intense bright lights. It feels impressive, but it doesn’t feel like home.

As we move into 2026, the design world is shifting. Reddit threads on r/InteriorDesign are buzzing about "Warm Minimalism"—the desire to keep things clean but add soul, texture, and warmth back into our spaces.

To explore how lighting plays a crucial role in this shift, we sat down with interior stylist Elara Vance. Known for her ability to soften brutalist architecture with organic textures, Elara shares why her latest obsession is the combination of organic forms and smoked glass—specifically featuring our Branching Smoke Glass & Brass Chandelier.

Elara Vance in her element

We met Elara in her sun-drenched living area on a late Tuesday afternoon. The vibe is calm, collected, and effortlessly chic—a perfect backdrop for discussing the nuances of modern warmth.

Q: Elara, you’ve famously said that "perfection is boring." How does that apply to modern lighting?

Elara:  It’s true! The problem with a lot of modern design over the last decade is that it became too rigid. Everything was a perfect square or a perfect circle. It feels sterile, like a clinic, not a home.

Humans aren't made of straight lines. We crave nature. That’s why organic shapes—things that look a bit imperfect, asymmetrical, or fluid—are so important right now. They break the grid. They introduce movement and softness into a rectangular room.

Q: You recently installed the Branching Smoke Glass Chandelier in a dining project. Why this specific piece?

Elara: This piece is the perfect example of the antidote. Look at its structure—it’s branching out horizontally, like a tree limb, not just hanging straight down. It has a sculptural quality that fills the volume of the room without feeling heavy. It commands attention but in a very quiet, confident way.

Q: Let's talk about the glass. Why "smoked" glass? Why not clear?

Elara: This is the secret sauce for "mood." Clear glass with exposed bulbs can sometimes feel harsh or too utilitarian—like an interrogation room!

Smoked glass acts like a filter. It’s the Instagram filter for your room. Even when the light is off, the grey glass looks moody and sophisticated against a light wall. It adds a layer of depth that you just don’t get with clear glass.

Q: And when it’s turned on?

Elara: That’s when the magic happens. The smoke tint takes the edge off the LED bulbs. Instead of a bright white light, you get this incredibly warm, amber glow. It's diffused, soft, and flattering. It makes everyone at the dining table look beautiful. That’s the kind of trust you want from your lighting—you want to know it's going to make your home feel good, not just bright.

Q: What's your final tip for someone trying to cure the "sterile modern" look?

Elara: Stop buying matching sets. Mix your materials. If you have a sleek, cold marble table, pair it with the warmth of this brass and smoked glass fixture. The contrast is what makes a room feel curated and high-end.

Wait for the evening, dim the lights low, and watch how the smoked glass transforms the space into a sanctuary. That’s a feeling you can’t buy in a showroom.
